Major General Golan concluded his service in the Israel Defense Forces as the Deputy Chief of The General Staff, a position he held from 2014-2017.
During his military career he held several key positions including Commander of the Nahal Brigade, Commander of the 91st Division and Commander of the Judea & Samaria Division.
He also commanded the IDF Home Front Command, which he led during Operation Cast Lead.
In 2011 he assumed command for the IDF Northern Command, a position he held until his service as Deputy Chief Of The General Staff for the IDF.
He entered Israeli politics in 2019 and is a leading figure in the Democratic Union party.
